Migration and identity. Expats, migrants, relokants, Nomads. Russian migrants in Georgia.

Second 🥈 class of the course on Global Nomads Careers, 🎓 turned to be really "academic" one: we had devoted most of the time to the deep and immensely rich concept of identity, 🆔 demanding both through explanation and practical examples.

Understanding of the multiple identities of every individual - be it ethnic, religious, political, professional or any other, allows everyone to become a pioneer researcher on this topic, because, following good literature prompts, students can analyze their own identities - both collective ones and individual, monitoring the changing ⏩ of such identities in our current turbulent lives .

Following many live-stiries of the class members, we followed, how their own identity was formed - of different components, including family religion, parents political preferences, region where they lived and city/country environment.

What is specially important for our topic of "nomadism" - as a culture of easy moving around different places - is initial importance of "spatial identity" 🆔 , vividly demonstrated by Russian-speaking relocants in Batumi, many introducing themselves, when asked ",where are you from" - as "Siberian", or "from the Urals", or, "from Snt.Petersburg", while others would say "from Russia" - with all the following connotations of such a confession in current day's Georgia.

What does it mean for a relocant to identify with a country of origin? How much this reflects on the behavior? On the plans for future job or moving to the other country? 🤔

We realiяed, that the whole issue of difference between "immigrant", "relocant" and "nomad" - is not much more, than self-identification and acceptance of the current status and plans for the near future. 😄

Such self-identification and its dynamic is one of the possible topics of the Final Course Works , that class participants are beginning to consider.

Come join the class - every Thursday, from 19.00:

  • 24 April
  • 1 May
  • 8 May
And give it a thought, 🤔 which identity, among many, is more important for you - and why distant work may fit your professional and personal needs the most. 🤓
