Lecture on Constitutional Right to Peaceful Assembly, beginning with this right internationally protected by OSCE/ODIHR Guidelines on FoA, which I had an honour to participate in drafting - with international team of legal scholars from many OSCE countries and on ezmples how those Guidelines translate into regulation of assemblies in national legislation , including Georgian Law on regulating Assemblies and various Police practices.
Our class greatly benefitted from 🆕 participants joining - Parviz, arriving 🛬 from US, as a scholar from Columbia University, who is originally from Tajikistan, and Nodari, arriving from Armenia, who is a recent relocant from RF, PhD in law, former teacher at HSE and twice a municipal deputy of Moscow.
Their expertise was very helpful in discussing cases of successful and less successful mass protests and assemblies in post- soviet Republics, as well as other countries in the world, like cases of Arab Spring and Taksim square protests in Turkey.
Of particular importance was my data and the following discussion on current protests in the USA, held nation-wide, under the motto of "No Kings!"
We watched videos from American cities and explored individual slogans, that protesters of different age, race and social backgrounds were holding, analysing Individual protest messages, comparing them between different times, countries and cultures.
It brought us to a brilliant discovery 😃 : close analysis of posters revealed the EXACT SAME text of one poster, hold by protesters 26 May 2025 in Batumi, at the corner of Constitutional Court, and the text of many posters in the USA in nation-wide protests 14 July 2025, which reads "When INJUSTICE becomes a LAW, the Resistance becomes the Duty"😉
This gave an unexpected proof , that people in countries as different, as the USA and Georgia, have the same aspirations while participating in protests and express the same key messages to both their authorities and fellow citizens, proving, that Constitutional Right to Assembly provides room 😁 strong manifestation of the same understanding 😉 of citizenship - to exercise demands and control over democratically elected Governments.
