Course Learning Outcomes
You will become acquainted with the turning points in the political history of Sakartvelo and gain a better understanding of the painful issues in its complex path toward national statehood. This process is still ongoing, as are debates about the significance of each of these historical turning points.
Knowledge Assessment Format
A short essay of 3–5 pages or a presentation of 4–5 slides on one of the course topics. The topic of the Final Course Project is proposed by the student and approved by the lecturer after consultation.
Course Topics
- The War of 08.08.08 and the territorial integrity of Georgia.
- The Treaty of Georgievsk. 1783–1810: prerequisites and consequences for Sakartvelo.
- The Act of Independence and the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Georgia on May 26, 1918.
- The dissident movement since 1956; demonstrations in defense of the state language on April 14, 1978.
- The struggle to leave the USSR. The tragedy of April 9, 1989.
