Contemporary Art: How to understand and create it

Course Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the key historical and theoretical paradigms of contemporary art and will learn to:

  • understand how artistic methods shape the semantic and visual structures of artworks;
  • analyze art projects within the current cultural context;
  • discuss artistic practices in digital, ecological, and research-based environments with well-grounded arguments;
  • formulate their own artistic position and develop an original project.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to complete one of the following assignments:

  • develop a concept for an art object or project, including a description of the artistic method, theme, and form;
  • prepare a report or presentation on one of the course topics related to contemporary artistic practice.

Course Topics

  1. Artistic Method and the Framework of Contemporary Art
  • What is an artistic method?
  • The transition from modernism to postmodernism and metamodernism — key reference points.
  1. Art During the Pandemic — Digital Art, NFTs, and Metaverses
  • Sincerity, anonymity, freedom, new worlds, and artistic presence in the digital environment.
  1. Science Art and Eco-Art
  • From anthropocentrism to attention toward non-human agents and research-based practices.
  1. Nomadic Art
  • Parallel cultural realities, mobility, archives of experience, and artistic testimony.
  1. Artistic Concept and Project-Based Thinking
  • The structure of an art project: idea, context, medium, statement.
  • Presentation of participants’ own works/concepts in the format of a preliminary final project defense.

About the Teacher
  • Graduated from the Saint Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts in 2011 with a degree in Theatre and Film Production Design.

Professional Experience

  • Chief stage designer at drama theatres in Ulan-Ude, Murmansk, Novosibirsk, Gomel, Chernihiv, and Odesa.
  • More than 100 theatre productions in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Hungary.
  • Since 2019, has been working with video mapping, video projections, and 3D visualizations for theatre performances and concerts.
  • Project and art manager of the virtual artist oDreams.

Awards and Recognition

  • Laureate of the Interregional Award “Novosibirsk Transit” (2016) — Best Stage Design.
  • The performance “Viy” by the Chernihiv Music and Drama Theatre received the award for Best Large-Scale Production at the GRA Festival (2018).
  • Curator and co-founder of the theatre artists’ festival “Mezhsezonye.fest” in Saint Petersburg.
  • Co-author and co-curator of the “Balaganchik” pavilion at The Wrong Biennale in the Spatial metaverse.
