Course Learning Outcomes

You will gain basic knowledge of political theory and sociology needed to understand the dynamics of past and current protest campaigns. The course will be mainly practical: at home, we will read texts on the theory of protest movements, and in class we will try together to apply them to a case that is close and familiar to many of us — protests and opposition in Russia. If your interests are connected with protests in other countries, we will study them as well.

Course Topics

  1. Introductory Session. Politics as a Vocation and Profession, or the Balance Between Morality and Rationality in Political Action.
  2. Why Do People Take to the Streets? Why does discontent sometimes turn into protest, and sometimes not?
  3. Meanings in Protest. How can words be used to fight against people with machine guns, and why do some slogans work while others do not?
  4. Protest Repertoire. Why do 20 complaints to a deputy sometimes work better than one large rally?
  5. Protests and Revolution in the 21st Century. What are we trying to achieve, and what do we actually get?
